John 11:38-40
John 11:38-40
KJV 38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. 39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. 40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
Rotherham 38 Jesus, therefore, again, being indignant within himself, cometh unto the tomb. Now it was a cave, and, a stone, was lying thereon. 39 Jesus, saith, Take ye away the stone! Martha, the sister of the deceased, saith unto him—Lord! by this time, he stinketh, for it is, four days. 40 Jesus saith unto her—Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldst believe, thou shouldst see the glory of God?
These are my thoughts, please share yours.
38 Jesus had emotion for this family. Tombs were places that were consider unclean due to the dead bodies. Stones were put in front of the tombs to keep animals out from carrying away the bodies. This stones were also very heavy because they would cover the whole cave entrance, they would be only moved upon a death of another from that family which would go into that tomb or once a year to gather the bones of a love one which would then go into a stone box inside the cave or else where.
39 This would have been in the elements, heat for one. This would not be like today where they keep them cooled until the arrangements for funeral are made. They would have taken them to the cave that day unless it was the Sabbath which then they would have done it the next day. Four days the body would have started to decay.
40 Jesus reminds her of Him telling her this. We sometimes ourselves need a reminder. The people are about to see the glory of God but later reject Him as Lord.
