    The Ritual of Washing Feet

The Ritual of Washing Feet Empty The Ritual of Washing Feet

Post by Susan Thu Jun 16, 2022 10:33 am

As a child, I often wondered at the Ritual Foot Washing, I had witnessed in church.  These days, it doesn't seem as  important. any churches have forgotten the ritual, that sent so many into the ministry.  But  back then, it was an event!  For the most part, it was done for new pastors, and for missionaries, getting ready to travel to foreign lands.  But what was the meaning behind the ritual washing?

In the Old Testament, the Ritual of washing feet, is found in Genesis 18:4,  Genesis 19:2, Genesis 24:32, Genesis 43:24, Judges 19:21, 2 Samuel 19:24 and Exodus 30:19-21. And there are many other verses I could quote here.  For time sake, I will leave that research up to you.

In Genesis 18, we find Abraham, offering travelers  some water to wash their feet, followed by a meal. In chapter 19, we find that Lot beseached the travelers that came to his home to come in for the night and wash their feet.  After some coaxing the travelers came in and were given water for a foot washing and food, and a place to sleep, safely.
In Genesis 24, Abraham was old.  He sent his servant to fetch a wife for his son, Isaac.  But to find the wife, that GOD has intended, Abraham shares certain criteria that to be met. The animals were to be fed, the Servant and all men with him, would have their feet washed and they would be fed.  The chosen woman, would be willing to go with them. She would be chosen from the Cannanites.

In Genesis 43,  during a great famine, Joseph, had been elevated to a seer over all the land, including all the grain and food, that was stored there.  GOD had given Joseph a dream, in which, he was shown how to save the food, before the famine hit the nation of Egypt. Joseph, was the one whom his own brother's sold into slavery.  Everything has a meaning for GOD, to accomplish HIS Good Will. In this case, it was the brother's, to whom, Joseph washed their feet and fed their animals.  Joseph, was doing the WILL of GOD, in his servantude actions. He did so, in order to save his entire family and father.

In Judges 19, there is a turn of events that were not meant for good.  The good old man, offered shelter for the night to strangers, and did the ritual washing of feet, feeding them and their animals, and providing lodging for them.  But evil men, came to his door, demanding that he turn over the stanger for their pleasure.  But instead, the old man offered his daughter and his concubine.  They took the cuncubine and abused her. The woman was severely abused.  The man, in his anguish, divided her body in 12 parts and sent each piece to the  coasts of Israel as a warning. The warning meant sudden death, to those who abused the rituals of GOD.

In 2 Samuel 19, Mephibosheth the son of Saul,  came before the King, unclean, unkempt and filthy.  The king had failed to recognise Mephilbosheth, as a son of King Saul.  All of King Saul's family was dead,  except Mephilbosheth,  who was in a deep state of mourning.

In Exodus 30, we see that the Ritual Foot Washing  and hand washing, was necessary for the priests to enter into GOD's Tabernacle. They must be cleansed in order to enter into GOD's Presence for the congregation.  Or they would die, if they failed to cleanse themselves, first.

The Ritual of Washing Feet Empty Re: The Ritual of Washing Feet

The Old Testement, has given us insight into why the Ritual Foot Washing was  so important.  Besides it being for cleanliness, and removing dirt from the feet, it held an important role, in why JESUS would wash the Disciples feet. Please read:

    John 13 (KJV)

JESUS was preparing the Disciples for the Servanthood, of reaching the lost and dying world, for their Salvation.   Just as the Priests of the Old Testement could not go before GOD in the Tabernacle, the Disciples had to be cleansed, in order to serve GOD, as they went out into all the world, to proclaim the Messiah, JESUS.  May we remember, and be willing to wash one another's feet, today.  And the ritual washing,  today, has become the  ultimate outward showing, through Baptism.  Baptism, is the sign, of Death, Burial and Ressurection.  We are following in CHRIST JESUS. So HIS Death, HIS Burial, HIS RESSURECTION, becomes our Death, Burial and Ressurection. From the Ritual Washing of Feet, to this moment, in the life of Christ, GOD is fulfilling HIS WORD for us all. May you be truly blessed.
