    The Angels visit Shepherds

    Luke 2:8-20 (KJV)

8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

GOD chose working men, to tell the news of a Newborn King! He chose men, who were tending their sheep, in the night. GOD did not use a star, to show the Shepherds where to find the babe. But a heavenly host of angels announced the KING, that would save them all! The angels shared where to find the babe, and what to look for. They would know the KING, when they found the place and saw with their own eyes, what the angels proclaimed! Can you imagine, the sight, on a dark stary night, as the heavenly host lit up the skies in chorus of praises to GOD, for sending a SAVIOR? Why would GOD, choose Shepherds to give this announcement to? Maybe because JESUS would be known as the GOOD SHEPHERD. Or maybe because GOD chooses ordinary men to do miraculous things. We may ponder as Mary did. Mary took all these things to heart. She thought upon them, as she cradled her newborn son, in a feed trough.

And what are swaddling cloths? Newborn lambs were often wrapped in cloths after birth, to keep them warm and to keep them from becomming blemished. Mary would have prepared cloths or strips of cloths, to wrap her baby in, soon after birth. She would have washed the baby and then wrapped him to keep him warm and secure. Wrapping a baby today, has the same thought behind it. Today, we wrap newborn baby's to keep body heat in, and to mimic the womb. In the womb, the baby was warm and safe. Outside the womb, the baby is exposed to everything around it. Baby's startle easily. Being wrapped tightly allows the baby to feel secure. The bindings, or strips of cloth, would later be used upon JESUS for HIS crucifixion.

The feed trough has another meaning. As JESUS would become the sacrificial lamb, to save the world. Baby lambs, were wrapped in swaddling cloth, and laid in the trough away from other lambs, to keep them safe from predators and unblemished (as it was required by the law) This was indeed a sign to simple Shepherds!
